Science assessment

Dear Ms.Bioela,

I have received your mail about the heartburn. I tell you my conclusion; you can use baking soda to heal heartburn. I am not sure if you know indigestion so I will explain it for you.
Indigestion is when too much amount of acids to digest is made in stomach. It happens when you ate too much or too fast. Stomach produces extra amount of acids and that burns your stomach. (Strong acid can damage skins)In pH, it is about level 2.0~5.0.The lower pH, the worse. The way to solve this problem is to weaken stomach acid using antacid, weak alkali. It increase the pH of stomach acid and protect skin inside the stomach from heartburn.  Baking soda can be used as an antacid and a lot of people used it, but there is an issue that baking soda is so alkaline and there is a possibility that it neutralizes the whole acid and acid in a stomach. According to the experiment we conducted, it fully neutralized hydrochloric acid.We cannot digest without acid. So the baking soda is unfavorable.
we strongly recommend you to use proper indigestion tablet in pharmacy. Indigestion tablet is not so alkaline and doesn't neutralize much, so you can use it repeatedly and heal slowly. If you think your heartburn is not serious, it’s the best chewing gum because saliva, including a little alkali, is produced.
I propose you to take “Gaviscon” ,if you think the heartburn is serious because it is the most alkaline (sodium bicarbonate) and most reliable that almost every pharmacy is selling. If you could not find any, search for other antacid with pharmacists. Use baking soda if you are suffering economically but use it as a last resort. We are hoping good news from you. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions about our advice.

Yours sincerely,

Dolly
